The engineers in this zone all got into engineering through an apprentice scheme, rather than going straight to University after studying for A Levels. You will learn about apprenticeships and the vast array of career opportunities they open up. The zone is funded by the STFC (Science & Technology Facilities Council) who run an apprentice scheme, so 3 of the 5 engineers in this zone work for the STFC.
One engineer is currently an apprentice in electronics at the STFC, while another is a former apprentice now making lots of big science projects actually work. There’s a former apprentice who now helps train new apprentices whilst working with lasers, as well as one now working in urban regeneration. Finally, we’ve one former apprentice who’s working to electrify the Great Western railway.
