Most people love pizza. Even when it is a frozen one that you just need to cook in the oven for 10 minutes before eating it. But do you know all the different steps that pizza has gone through since the wheat for its dough and the tomato for its sauce were harvested in the field? The Food Zone follows the theme of the Wellcome Trust’s major initiative for 2016, The Crunch.
This zone will look at the engineering of food, and food safety. How is food produced, stored, and delivered to our tables? Food engineers think of better and more efficient ways of growing plants and rearing animals, they develop new heating and freezing methods; they also develop food packaging as well as preventing bacteria from growing in our food.
In this Zone you will meet engineers designing tasty new snack foods like crisps and crackers, looking at the science that help make millions of chocolate treats around the world, and making yeast produce medicinal curry spices that are normally made by plants. There will also be engineers designing new machines to make new tasty biscuits, and growing meat in the lab!
