24 years with a research company, then 3 years with a university in South Africa, and I’ve been at a university in Cornwall since 2017
Lecturer in robotic and automated mining
Camborne School of Mines, The University of Exeter
An electrical engineering working in mining
I live in Penryn, Cornwall with my family. I like kayak surfing when the weather is sunny and reading books when it is raining. My favourite fast food is a pastie.
I look for ways to build robots that can go into dangerous places instead of sending people.
My Typical Day: Every day is different. During term, I lecture, so I spend time preparing and then time presenting. Outside of term time, I work on robots.
What I'd do with the money
I'd build an robot companion to help me talk about engineering
I’d develop a 1.5m high robot with a base like a Segway, a face on a screen like an iPad and a pair of hands that could do cool things. It would follow me around and do what I told it to, for using when I visit schools and when people visit my university. We’d be a double act.
