Turn on the tap and it’s right there. Gushing into your sink after coming from….where? Engineers have always worked with water. Think irrigating crops, building boats, avoiding floods. Modern engineers are involved in making sure water gets where it is needed most and how we can make the most of the water we have. They are working on structures that deal with water everyday and working on protecting us against the damage too much water in the wrong place can do. The Water Zone follows the themes of the Wellcome Trust’s major initiative for 2016, The Crunch.
In this zone, you will meet an engineer who creates virtual simulations of equipment on construction vessels to see if they could survive stormy seas, a marine engineer who has worked on a tall ship at sea maintaining the on board equipment and someone who makes sure our water is safe to drink by building huge pipes and tanks. There is also someone researching how to destroy pesticide pollutants in drinking water, and someone looking at how we can protect ourselves from floods by using computers to see how water moves around.
