Directly helping others through my work does not happen very much in my line of work, however, I am involved in teams which provide all sorts of buildings from houses to schools, hospitals to airports which help many people? Hope this is along the lines of what you were asking?

My work I have done won’t directly change someones life. However, the energy from waste plant which I’m helping build will improve peoples’ quality of life in the long run. It will help preserve natural resources and still provide them with the means of electricity without damaging the environment. This will mean global warming will hopefully decrease which is important in regard to the ozone layer, air, water quality (etc). Which is all very important for our survival. The surrounding people living in the area will benefit in regards to their health. As the waste isn’t going into a landfill, the air quality including the smell ( which they breath in) will improve as well as the contamination of the land they live on.

In my past experiences, I have not yet invented or built something that has directly helped other people. Although, the project I am currently working on (Crossrail West Station upgrades – from Maidenhead to London Paddington) , once finished will provide the public of better transport links in and out of London, as well as many other advantages.
