  I hope parts of the research that I and my research group are doing can be used for all three. The focus of our research is on helping people, whether that’s through the design of something like an implant or a surgical tool that can be used in a hospital, or the design of something that can prevent injury in the first place. If we find out something in our research that can be used in other areas of design, like in structural engineering or architecture then that’s great, but the focus remains on helping people.
  
  To me engineering and design are the same thing. Sometimes people think of designers as artists and engineers as more technical, but both groups have to collaborate and understand a lot about what each other do.
