Great question! My work is focused on preventing the injuries, but when they do happen it’s really important that they are treated as soon as possible. Normally soldiers carry some equipment with them so they can treat injuries in the battlefield. The biggest difference has then been access to specialist hospitals at Camp Bastion for example. One of my PhD students is doing some really interesting work on fracture of the pelvis and how to treat this, which has the potential to save lives. We help design and advise on some of the devices that can be used in treatment, but unfortunately can’t share this information except with military and some civilian trauma surgeons.
If you were involved in a traffic accident the standard of care they offer, and the speed that they can get you to hospital is as good if not better than what you would have in a big city like London in the UK.
