Difficult to say becoming competent and having the skills and confidence to design and make electronics which work tends to creep up. Once you pass your first/second degree – most hospital position require a master level entry. There are accredited training schemes which over a course of around 2-3 years will take to to a proficiency where you can safely practice on your own.

Becoming a Charter Engineer – a professional qualification would show fellow colleague that you have made it and can work on you own in a competent manner. Since I can into engineering via a non standard route it took me around 13 year to get my CEng, but following a traditional CEng route would take 3-6 years post graduation

I did a 4 year undergraduate degree (MEng) and now I’m 2 years into a 4 year PhD programme.

It depends what you take as the starting point. I spent eight years doing my MEng and PhD. Luckily I was one of the last undergraduate students who didn’t pay fees, and I got paid to do my PhD.

It’s then taken me another 9 years to get to the position that I’m in now, but I was in a similar position after 1 year, I’ve just moved up since then!
