I did a four year MEng degree and now I’m doing a 4 year PhD programme. Uni is definitely very eventful! I think it really shapes you as a person because it’s the first time you’re independent.
I did a five year MEng degree in Edinburgh – you spend an extra year in Scotland, and I was the last year that didn’t have to pay fees. Then I spend four years doing my PhD and 1 year as a research associate, before I became a lecturer at Imperial – so 9 years as a student! It was very eventful, but I have to protect the names of the guilty so can’t share the stories!
I wouldn’t have done it any differently. Doing a PhD is really just like having a very cool job. On an undergraduate degree you do really mature as a person – I think you’re a lot more appreciative of how people have helped you along the way by the end of a degree than you are at the start.
