Yes, I think it would inspire young people to become engineers, because it gives you a chance to interact with us directly. I never had opportunities like this at school, everything I learnt on careers was from what I read in books and guides – I couldn’t really imagine what the job was like and what it actually involved.
Things like “I’m an Engineer” help to paint a better a picture of the engineer for you guys. You can tell how much they love/hate it. You can see what excites them and what doesn’t. You can find out what they do for real everyday. The list goes on and on!
Finally, if I didn’t think this competition was going to work I wouldn’t be answering this question now. But, young people are just that – young. You still have some time to really explore all of your options for a career and you may find something you want to do much more than engineering. If that is the case, do that. You must always be true to yourself.
@put: I really hope that the taking part has made you all aware of what engineering is all about and might even considering going in for it as a career. I have really enjoyed the last couple of weeks and the questions that have come my way have made me thjink quite hard on occassions.
I really hope it does! I think the best way of finding out about a career is to talk to people who do that career and this competition gives you the chance to do that.
