• Question: How changed since becoming an engineer?

      @clarafinn: When I started there were no computers and everything was looked up in books, which limited the amount you could do when studying a problem. There was no email so it was letters, phone, or telex, and then faxing messages. We also had lots of secretaries who typed most of our documents! How things have changed, eh!

      I haven’t been an engineer for very long, but already I have noticed that there is a lot more interest in renewable energy and sustainability (that means something that works well and will keep working well for a long time without causing any problems like pollution). The courses at university now have more projects about sustainability. When I was at school we didn’t really talk very much about climate change, but now everybody knows what it is and learns about it. So although the technology hasn’t changed much, the focus of what engineers need to do has changed a lot.
