@shenshaw: I was at school and did A levels in Maths (Double), Physics and Economics and then went on to University. I was “sponsored” by General Motors (Vauxhall) (doesn’t happen much these days) and they put me through an apprentice-workshop for a year and then three years at University. Finally I had a full year as a Graduate working with a wide variety of people, becoming a full Engineer in GM’s eyes at the end of it, so I could say the basic bit took me five years after school.
