Yes it can be, but it is something I enjoy so the hard work is worth it. Sometimes there are problems that I don’t know how to solve, or even how to start solving and it can be hard work figuring it out. But I like a challenge and when I make progress it feels really good. There is a lot of learning theory that has to be done and can be quite hard work, but once you know the theory applying it is very enjoyable. There are also a lot of fun things to do – designing equipment for experiments is enjoyable and can be quite easy (because the work to understand what you need has already been done), and seeing what other people are doing and discussing ideas with them is really good too, so it isn’t all just a hard slog.
Sometimes it is difficult because there is not always a single answer… a team of engineers working together may all have different ideas…. the trick is, that you can always rationalise things as an engineer, so although they may be ‘hard’ at times, eventually you will pull through and find the answer! It’s good to be challenged, to keep your brain ”switched on” and also to work with many people who are very intelligent and logical. You are constantly learning new methods and facts, and this is what keeps it interesting!
