I have been a Company Director before and it is fun, but very very tiring, so I took a staff engineers job (called downsizing ones job) and am much happier in my present Mechanical Engineer’s position in a very special company. Regards Robin

I started my own company with two colleagues two years ago after being pushed around by big company systems. I have loved every minute of being my own boss. As Robin says, its very hard work, but having the freedom to make your own decisions, direct the company the way you want it to go and to create and realise an exiciting vision for the future is a huge motivation.

I don’t think I will want to be a head of the company because I worry that it would stop me doing as much technical work. A lot of engineers go on to become managers of engineering departments because it used to be the only way to get promoted past a certain level. However now more companies are offering technical career paths where you can reach the same level as a manager, but just by being an expert in your technical area. That sort of career appeals much more to me than being head of a company.
