Hi Eoin420
Recently I’ve been involved in a project that is exploring how to make it possible for steel beams from buildings to be reused.
At the moment they usually get recycled which is ok, but it still takes energy to melt them down and actually most of them are in perfectly good condition, its just that noone bothers to try reusing them because it would be a bit more effort.
I think these are the sorts of projects I want to get involved in more. Finding out where theres stuff we could and should be doing (to be more environmentally friendld) but we dont, because its always been done a different way and change is sometimes hard. Doesnt sound very glamorous, but I still think its exciting.
What about you?
That’s a difficult one, as I would want to be involved right at the idea stage and work on it right through to completion. Maybe a tunnel from the UK to the USA. That would be interesting.
I always see loads of amazing Engineering projects and think ‘I wish I could work on that!’ I think one of the coolest projects at the moment is the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia. It’d be awesome to work on the foundations for these buildings – the foundations for the Kingdom Tower are over 60 metres deep to make it stand up! When it’s built it’ll be over 1 kilometre high (that’s over 10 times the height of Big Ben). It’ll be the tallest building in the world when it’s complete! If you google it there’s some amazing pictures and youtube videos of it 🙂
I think it would be really cool to work on a medical device. For example, working on an artificial pancreas for people with diabetes, which can read a person’s sugar levels and give them the right amount of insulin (more complicated than it sounds!). It would be really cool to use engineering to directly help millions of people with their lives 🙂
