We always used to wonder in our maths lessons what the point was. Now that I use maths in my job I see how important it is, and how it shapes our world – even the seemingly pointless bits!
E.g. describing shapes in geometry – why does the size of the triangle even matter?? But it turns out we can use it to explain how particles move and fluid flows. And that’s what helps plane fly, and power stations work, and engines run, so much more.
Mine would have to be maths (if that’s allowed!) I really enjoyed the subject at school and it was one of the reasons I picked Civil Engineering over Architecture because I wanted to carry on studying something maths based when I left school.
I use maths, particularly mechanics, a lot in my work, especially now I’m doing research and dealing with lots of equations. I sometimes find it difficult but I find it really satisfying when I finally get an answer to something I’ve been working out for a long time!
