• Question: When you were little what did you think engineering was all about?

      I had no idea! I didn’t even really know about engineering when I was picking A-level choices (my A-level’s included French and history, so my careers advisor suggested I could study French history!). It was only when I was picking a degree that I found out about it.

      I wish I’d had something like this to learn more about different careers. Even if you don’t want to become an engineer, it’s still great to learn about what sort of choices are out there for you. I hope you enjoy it!

      When i was about 10 I thought it involved sitting in an office producing Engineering Drawings by hand on a big drawing board.
      And it was reality when I was 15 and I undertook some work experience in year 10

      I probably thought it involved overalls, spanners and lots of grease and grime.
      But mostly that’s not the case. Although I’d say a willingness to get your hands dirty now and then definitely helps!

      I guess when I was younger I didn’t really know my job existed! I thought an Engineer was someone who fixed your car or fixed your boiler. I thought Architects did my job – it was only when I started thinking about how things around me were built that I found out there were people called Civil Engineers. I knew then that that was what I wanted to do but I didn’t meet an Engineer until a careers day at my school when I was 17.

      Hopefully events like this are giving you an insight into what Engineering is – and how broad a subject it is!
