My research was based upon the use of recycled materials in road construction. Until the late 1990’s recycled material was not permitted into any new road construction. My research allowed the Highways Agency to permit recycled materials to be used.

      Hi Elllxox!

I never really planned to end up doing research like I am doing. I went to a talk about soft soil and found it really interesting learning how people were researching it and what gaps in current knowledge there was. I figured why don’t I be the one to fill in the missing knowledge in that area!

What I love about my research is that from that talk, I’ve now got a project that will help the construction industry and future rail projects worldwide – it’s something practical. My research isn’t just about soft soil and vibrations, it’s about how this will help the design of railway lines and I think that practical part of my research is what makes it so rewarding 🙂

I studied mechanical engineering because I was always fascinated by machines and how stuff works.
Originally I’d planned to do aerospace engineering but mechanical engineering covers similar topics and is less spicialised – so I thought I’d have more options afterwards.
And now I’m researching how building materials damage the environment and how to make them less damaging.
It’s not something I’ve always wanted to study but it fits with the things I’m interested in and it means I’m learning new things which will hopefully be good for my career in the future

      Hi Ellxox 🙂

I chose to research renewable energy & processes because I am quite passionate about climate change. To be honest I hadn’t been passionate about much before really, I knew I enjoyed a few different things but didn’t have a particular direction in mind. That didn’t really bother me, because lots of people are like that, and they are still very happy in their careers. But then I read lots about the environment and realised I had across something I loved. So I seized the opportunity with both hands and decided to go for it!
