Hi! Thanks for your question, I was inspired by a few ladies I met when I got invited to a conference for women in engineering run by the women’s engineering society . They were all really passionate about their work and made me more curious to learn more! This really inspired me to see what I could do in engineering and learn more about it.
Hi Eloises, I was inspired by my Grandad. He was a very good engineer and was always making and fixing things. He taught me a lot about engineering when I was a child which I enjoyed. It left me feeling interested to learn more and look at doing what I enjoy as a career full time.
Excellent question Eloises… to be honest though I don’t think I was inspired by a particular person… I was always inspired by people who made a positive difference and came up with new ideas and many of them are engineers so I guess that is why I thought it would be a good career for me.
I was lucky enough to have two people who influenced me in becoming an engineer.
firstly there was my great grandfather who was a master builder and carpenter during both world wars! He was on the team of people who helped rebuild parts of the city of Exeter after world war 2 as it was seriously damaged by air raids.
He was a man who could turn his hand to anything engineering wise and was the man who taught be to draw using slide rules and set squares!
More recently the other person who has inspired me and who was the one to give me that final kick up the bum I needed to actually apply for and stick with my engineering course at university. He is my senior officer at my sea cadet unit and in his every day life he is a Marine Engineer. He still spurs me on even now after a bad day at the office.
