It was not a conscious decision to become an engineer. In fact I just really wanted to be an electrician but didn’t quite know how to go about it. But I am glad that I took this path as it has worked out well for me.
I was a mature student so took a more unusual route into engineering then most. I did a foundation degree, followed by a masters and managed to get a job straight away as an R&D engineer.
I first found out about engineering as a career from my tutor at college. I had always set my sights on being a pilot in the RAF, but my dreams where squashed when I found out that I was too short and I was really lost on what I wanted to do as a career. This is when my tutor stepped in and suggested engineering as he knew that I liked to understand how things worked. After a lot of research on the internet I decided to visit a number of Universities which offered engineering and I have never looked back : )
I have always been obsessed with how things work and was often taking things to pieces and often finding spare nuts and bolts after I put them back together.
My first real insight into engineering was during work experience placement at secondary school where I worked at a gas processing plant for a couple of weeks. It was big, noisy, a bit dangerous but also massively intriguing. I didn’t know how it worked!
That’s when I decided to learn more about engineering and went on to study at college and university aiming to get back there some day.
Also, my Dad is a Mechanical Engineer by background which directed me to become an Electrical engineer. That was over ten years ago, time flies when you’re having fun!
Growing up, I really enjoyed Maths and Science subjects at school because they taught me more about how the world around me worked.
My parents really encouraged me to pursue my interests (my dad’s also an engineer) and my teachers at school also suggested I do something science-related. So when it came time to choose a subject at university, I thought, why not choose something that combined my interest in aeroplanes and maths/science? So I chose to study aerospace engineering, and it’s been a blast 😀
