When I was at school I wanted to be a pilot in the RAF. I was in the Air Cadets from age 13 – 17, where I learnt to fly an aeroplane solo (that’s with no one else inside just me, which was scary!) and where I became really interested in the RAF as a career. Unfortunately I then found out that I was too short to become a pilot : ( and so had to rethink my options, which is when I found out about Engineering from my college tutor.
An astronaut!! I was always curious about outer space, planets, stars, etc. I kept up my interest in all things space related and that’s how I chose aerospace engineering at university.
I really wanted to be an architect, because I love drawing houses and redesigning spaces. It may all stem from growing up in a house that always seemed to be in mid-renovation, so it was chaotic to say the least – I could so clearly see in my mind how it would look and what it would be like to live in when it was finished, but frustrated that it never got that far. In fact 20 years on it still has an upstairs bathroom with no bath in it 🙂
