I’m quite a creative person so I focused on design in my GCSEs, taking Design & Technology and Graphic Design. My only real regret was to not take separate science subjects. I think doing physics as a standalone subject would have been of great benefit to the design subjects. I also remember being really put out that I need to take a language as I didn’t particularly enjoy languages. I even asked my French teacher what was the point as I had never been to France? Luckily for me I did take French as I ended up living in France for 4 years and found all that I had learnt at school came flooding back. I wish I had also done German as a lot of the manufacturers I work with are based in Germany and it would be nice to be able to read their research papers.
I really enjoyed science at school so I chose separate Sciences for my GCSEs and also Design & Technology as I also liked being hands on building things out of wood and metal. I also chose Geography over History as I didn’t enjoy writing essays.
I grew up in Canada where they don’t call them GCSEs but in secondary school, I did Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English, French and Art. I enjoyed Maths, Science and Art the most – and engineering is the perfect combination of the three!
