My first ever project as an Engineer was working on the design of a helicopter for the American President, Barack Obama. Our team was looking at the equipment which was to be put on-board and calculating how much it weighed, so we could decide where to put it.
On an helicopter it is really important that you know where the centre of mass is, as if it is not in the right place then the helicopter will not fly straight and could lead to a crash.
My first ever project as an engineer was also working on a helicopter – though not as cool as Obama’s! I was working on analysing the flow of air that gets sucked into the engine near the top of the helicopter. This air is what makes the rotor blades spin so it’s important to know that it’s entering the engine correctly.
My first project as an engineer was developing a solar powered vaccine refrigerator to be used all round the world where there is no grid electricity and children & mothers need to be vaccinated from horrible diseases.
Vaccines need to be kept at a specific temperature continuously so it was vital that the fridge stayed at a stable temperature regardless of where it was in the world and how sunny the day was.
It was a great project to work on and I was very proud of the final product.
