I’m lucky in that I don’t have to work incredibly long hours or work night shifts which would affect my social life a lot.
I work 37.5 hours during the week, and am free to go home at 5:00 every day, and 3:00 on a Friday. So that means my evenings are my own and I can spend them doing hobbies, cooking, spending time with my wife, visiting friends, and all the things that I enjoy.
Being able to relax at the end of the day is very important and helps with your own health and well being, as well as menaing you can be more productive at work and enjoy what you are doing.
I work a 37.5h week, most of the time. It’s pretty flexible though, so some weeks there won’t be much on and I’ll do less, some weeks I’m really busy and I do a bit more. So there’s plenty of time for a social life, and most companies are pretty flexible on what times you work (some people prefer to have a lie in and get to work at 10, some people prefer to go home early, and they arrive around 8).
I socialise quite a lot with my colleagues, who have also become my friends! 🙂
I work at the University as a (research) engineer. And one of the best things about working at the University is, its quite flexible! I can work hard and still enjoy my social life. But if you are thinking about working as a doctor (in NHS) then its better to speak to people in the NHS.
My work does take up a good deal of my time… partly because I do so many things right now. I have two part-time jobs (as an engineering communications intern and as a diving coach/instructor) and I go to school (in mass communications). On top of that I blog for Nature Network and try to participate in outreach projects like this one as much as I can!
But the wonderful thing is that all of this adds to my social life. I have a boyfriend who is wonderful… he is also a scientist and an engineer so we talk about EVERYTHING. The people in my classes are friendly and we can always discuss our work together. I would say that all the things that I do can add to my social life instead of taking away from it!
