• Question: Have you ever been injured at work?

      I’ve been lucky, no I’ve never been injured at work. I have heard of some nasty accidents though from people not following the correct safety procedures. We have to be very careful when walking around the factory, we have safety glasses we have to wear in certain areas to protect our eyes; in the welding area there are special curtains up to protect your eyesight from the bright flashes when the welders are working – it can damage your sight permanently if you’re not careful; also I have a pair of stell toe-cap shoes that I wear whenever I’m working around anything heavy.
      Hopefully I will never get hurt at work but I think I should be OK as long as I obey all the safety procedures.

      Risk management is a legal requirement for all employers in the UK and this means they must assess things that could go wrong in the workplace and put in measures to try to stop accidents from happening.

      PPE (personal protective equipment) is worn where necessary as a result of these risk assessments. I have a pair of steel toe cap shoes and I always wear them in areas where there are fork lift trucks in operation. I also have a hard hat to wear in situations that may require head protection and I have one of those bright yellow jackets to wear if I need to be seen by others where there might be a possible danger. I’ve always been a Tomboy and I love wearing them. 🙂

      Luckily not. We had an incident though when I was working as a graduate engineer. We were installing a fairly big X-ray machine in a hospital back in India. The installation of this machine is tricky because it is heavy and of awkward shape. We removed the machine from its specially made rig-packaging (made of wood). But while putting the machine in a place on the ground it just fell off and went sideways. All the engineers and technicians, everybody present, had to use their maximum strength to hold it and we somehow managed to put it in a secure position………

      But this was one off incident, usually there are procedures we have to follow to minimise the risk of any mishap small or big.
