Hi Holly!
My personal opinion is that it very much depends on what it is you want to do as a job. Some careers require a uni degree, and in that case I would say it is worth it (even with the fees). However, for some jobs you are better off with a different route than uni (for example apprenticeships), and there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing those. You are better off without the debt if you are not going to use your degree!
So my advice would be to decide what you want to do, and look at the best way of doing it (with help from the people around you). Uni shouldn’t be just a fall back (it’s a bit expensive for that…), but at the end of the day, it will be your decision and yours only!

I went to university because my school said we should all apply. If I’d thought about what it entailed I might have considered more carefully.
I think I still would have gone to university and I’m really pleased that I did. It enabled me to meet a lot of different people and friends that will stay with me forever; it gave me a lot of useful skills and knowledge in engineering; it was a very useful experience in finding out what kind of person I wanted to be and how to survive in the real world away from home.
The downside is that it costs a lot of money, and will cost even more now than what it did when I studied. Remember if you do go to university it is definitely worth cosidering if you can afford the cost of the course, and remembering you won’t be getting paid a full time wage during that time. There are student loans to help you through study, but it does mean you have to start paying it back once you complete your course.
So I don’t think we can say for certain whether it is worth it for you as it depends on different people’s circumstances, but if you do decide you want to go, I can say for definite that it will be an amazing, life changing experience. -

Hollyheardx…great to get all these questions from you! 🙂
I did go to university and it was worth it for me.
Everyone is different though and nobody can decide for you.
(Ugh, I know you would love someone to give you the answer!)Only you can decide, but it doesn’t have to be a hard decision.
My advice to you is: If you have the opportunity, then grab it with both hands and do the best you can.
The good thing about deciding to go to university is, if you don’t like it, you can always change your mind and go and do something else instead. At least that way, you will know what the right decision was and you will have made it yourself.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

hollyheardx,
Yes, I did go to University. If you want to become an engineer, you need to study at the University.
So it depends on what you want to do and what you are interested in?
Some jobs would not require a degree and apprenticeship would be more suitable for them.First you would need to decide what you want to do. Then find out whether you need a degree for that. If you need a degree then you would have to go to University.

I’m not sure how it works in the UK, but I went to college (4 year degree) after high-school. In the US, going to college for an undergraduate degree is very important… most of the time you can’t be an engineer without getting your Bachelors degree in engineering.
