I’m working on a new design for a hospital bed. It has to be made strong but as cheaply as possible so hospitals can afford to buy it.

I am working on a device that keeps patients still for radiotherapy treatment.

The device is like a big bean bag and we suck out all the air from insude. It maintains the patients pose for the next appointment.

Radiotherapy kills bad cancer cells and the device makes it a lot safer so we can get the tumors in the same place every time.

I’m currently working on a drug that could help cure breast and gastric cancers. At the moment we are trying to work out what the best way to make the tablets is. In the tablets that you or members of your family take, if you look at the ingredients you’ll see that there are quite a few. Not all of those are what is actually making you better. The others are there for other things (like helping the tablet stick together, or helping it dissolve in your stomach, or making sure the powder doesn’t stick to the tablet press).

So at the moment I’m working out what the ingredients need to be, how much we need, and which equipment to use to make the tablets. So I (and my colleagues!) have 134 sets of tablets that we’ve made last week, that need to be analysed. We have a look at them (are they smooth and not damaged), weigh them, measure them, and crush them (if it crushes too easily it is no good…). Don’t worry though, we have pieces of equipment to help us do that…

Once we have all the information we’ll be able to decide on the recipe for this tablet!

I am working on artificial joints. People have problems with their joints for example knee joint, hip joint or spinal joint. These problems may occur because of disease, accident or simply due to getting older. When people’s natural joints get damaged or they do not work, they can be replaced by an artificial joint. Otherwise with damaged joint person may not be able to move, walk properly. They might have severe pain.

We work to develop better artificial joints. We work to make sure that artificial joint works like natural one. So that the person with an artificial joint should have less or no pain. We work to make sure that, the artificial joint will allow that person to walk and do other activities normally.

      Hi ed!!

I am currently working on a project that will look at how scientists vs. non-scientists and engineers vs. non-engineers perceive communications and facts about our environmental crises and global climate change. With this research, which involves a survey of the public in Louisiana, I hope to improve how scientists and environmentalists communicate the science of climate in order to better engage and motivate young students to act for our environment!
