My favorite thing about engineering is that I am always working on something new, and precisely that it is adaptable. I may be asked one day to work out why a piece of equipment isn’t working right, even though I don’t know anything about it. My job is to do some research (generally on the internet, and ask for other people’s experience), put that all together with my general understanding on how things work, come up with some options, and test them until I work out how to solve the problem. I’d say that can be adapted to pretty much everything. 🙂
If what we are all saying sounds interesting to you, then you should definitely look into engineering. 🙂
It is indeed a pretty good wage, the starting salary for most engineers is around £28,000, which can rise to £60,000 during a career, depending on how ambitious you are.

Hello jordwallis2012! What an excellent question.

My favourite thing about engineering is learning about the way things work and how they are made.

Did you know that a lot of designs like Velcro are based on things in nature? (This is called biomimicry.)

Did you know that a lot of the blades on wind turbines are made out of balsa wood?

Engineering is very adaptable, I would say it’s the most adaptable career there is! Engineers can make anything from aeroplanes to iPhones and fairy cakes 🙂

I would thoroughly recommend engineering as a career to anybody because it’s so adaptable. So if you change your mind, you can be sure to have learned some valuable skills to transfer to any other job.

Is it a good wage? – Yes. Some engineers have the highest salaries in the world.

My favorite thing about engineering is that as an engineer, you get to be very creative! You get to design things and make them better!

Only you can know if you should take engineering as a career. It is a very good wage, but engineers also have to work very hard. On the other hand, even though you have to work hard, you get to be very creative and you are always working on something new!

I really like the fact that engineering is so varied. You can work in almost any industry you can think of and can get as involved as you want. It’s possible to either work quietly at a computer on your own; manage a project from the start to completion; get your hands dirty with tools and machines; or combine all of them. My job does have a bit of a combination with all the aspects of the business. I get to travel around the world talking to customers and suppliers and, most importantly, the suggestions that I make actually get turned into products. It makes me feel very proud that an idea can came out of my head, be made in 3D on my computer screen, then made into something physical I can hold in my hands.
I would say that engineering is adaptable to any industry you can imagine, and the money and career options are very good. You can easily become the director of a company with an engineering background. The only thing you have to do is work hard.

      Hi jordwallis2012,

I think most of the points about engineering are already mentioned by other engineers here.

My favourite thing about engineering is, it is exciting, it is fun, it is challenging, it is respected.
Also you learn quite a lot, you learn new things and new skills.
You earn decent salary. Engineering is really adaptable, for example- skills you learn in mechanical engineering can be useful in civil engineering and other way round.
