No. My family and friends were always very supportive; they rather encouraged me to do what I liked the most in my career. Equally, I always considered their advice and opinions quite seriously.
I never felt pressured by anyone when I was deciding on my career. My parents have always given me the best advice and have encouraged me to do whatever makes me happy.
At first, I felt a little pressured to go into medicine… but maybe this was just because my dad was trained to be a doctor, and I really looked up to my dad. But fortunately, I was able to pursue my dreams in science, and now in writing and science communications, with the full support of my parents!
I was lucky too, I didn’t have any pressure to choose any career. I was the first person in my family to go to university so I think everyone was pretty proud of me for doing that. While I was growing up I was able to take part in all sorts of activities and clubs to find out what I enjoyed and what I was good in. One of those things was spending a large part of my childhood playing with construction toys which I think is one of the main reasons I now do what I do.
I think the important thing is to find out what you enjoy and what you are good at. There may be some things that you enjoy that you aren’t able to make a career out of – these are the things you can then keep as your hobbies, which you can then enjoy at home.
