The closest, relevant experience I had was during our final year. We as final year students had to manage a group of second year students as they tackled their first ever project. One of the students I was personally managing who was charged with design of the electronics had only just came to the UK from China. His comprehension of my spoken English wasn’t particularly good and we found verbal communication very difficult. What I did in the end was give him instructions via email so that he could translate and read these instructions at his own leisure and as his English improved we could start communicating verbally more frequently.

Even though the student wasn’t a client as such, communication is critical as we don’t always speak a common language. It might be that your spoken first language is different, or that you are both from different fields and have difficulty putting ideas across to one another.

Um. I have many hilarious stories of difficult clients but I worry that professionality forbids me from repeating them (sorry). I always find that the easiest way to not be offended by difficult clients is to find the funny side of it, though 🙂

Like the Simon I’m not sure I can describe many situations, but with any difficult client, the important part to remember is that it isn’t personal, they are generally just trying to get what they want rather than attacking you as a person.

I don’t have any specific situations but usually when I’m working difficult people the most important thing I do is to be respectful, understanding and to deliver my view as clear s possible.
