There are rules that tell us how to design buildings so that everyone can get out safely if there is a fire, but sometimes these rules mean that the building is not going to be so nice to use (lots of doors everywhere to keep the fire in one spot, no natural ventilation as this could let the smoke spread, lots of boring concrete, etc). I work with other people designing the building so that the building can me made nice for people to use, but will still be safe if there is a fire. People probably won’t notice, but being in nice buildings does make our lives better. It often means that the building isn’t as expensive too, which means money can be spent on other things, like better medical equipment. And, of course, if there is a fire, my work should mean that everyone can get out ok, which would have a big impact on their lives!

My research will hopefully eventually amount to a technology or method that ends up in the next generations of medical scanners. The trouble is that technology of this type takes a lot of work to ensure that it is the best possible and it takes a long time for new ideas and technologies to make it to market. For example, I read a paper on a technology from the 1980’s which is only making it into scanners now!
My teaching and outreach work I’d argue has more of an impact on people’s lives immediately. The amount of young people I’ve either introduced into engineering topics or helped them develop their skills and confidence is growing. I hope that one day they’ll all become talented engineers and scientists and make a huge influence to their fields!

Hopefully it will help people find out whether they have an infection quickly and get the medicine they need before they come to any serious harm or spread it to others.

Well. I fix wheelchairs, so people who can’t walk can get around and be comfortable. Also, I fit machines to people to help them walk properly, so they can leave their house. Also, a few weeks ago me and some engineers and scientists found out some important information about dialysis machines (machines that clean your blood if your body can’t do it for you) that will change how nurses check the machines, so that could save peoples’ lives. All engineers influence peoples’ lives, I just happen to be lucky because I can see those changes close up!

My work involves developing ways to be able to keep track of the quality of medicinal drugs. Since everyone uses medicine at some point in their lives it definitely influences them as we need to pick the best medicines with the best quality to be able to cure/prevent diseases.
