Because I’m doing a PhD, the University provides me with funding of around £13,500 per year for me to live off. I then get the opportunity to earn extra by doing teaching and outreach work for the University which would pay at an hourly rate. So it’s not unusual for my annual income to to reach in excess of £15,000.

This is not representative of a typical salary of an engineer in industry. Most graduate engineers straight of University will start around the £20,000 mark.

Remember: PhD = Paid half what I Deserve 😉

When I started working full time as an engineer I was paid £23,000 as a Junior, the next level up where I currently work starts at about £30,000. I’m currently somewhere in the middle of the two.
