It’s different to what I expected in that I didn’t anticipate that I’d be doing all this teaching and outreach work that I’m doing at the moment. That was a most pleasant surprise for me. Doing research is pretty much what I expected it to be.
No not really. Before I studied Biochemical Engineering I knew very little about what engineering is and the role that they played. Now I have a much better idea, so I know what I’m getting myself into. I was surprised by the flexibility of my work though.
My job isn’t that different from what I expected it to be, because I spent a lot of time finding out about things at each point, and finding actual engineers to ask about their job. It’s something I’d recommend, no matter what you’re interested in: if you can spend a few days at somebody’s work, just chat about their job for an hour or even see if you can find books or blogs about it, it can show you what the job’s really like!
