Good question, there have been lots of Q’s on environment the past few days. Since all our jobs have something to do with measurement, the whole point of better measurement is to make things more efficient, cleaner, reduce waste (all consequences of good measurements of emissions, weight, part dimensions, etc etc), so more indirectly than directly.
To be honest, my job itself doesn’t really aim to help the environment. But for many engineers all the work they do is trying to solve environmental problems – engineering is definitely a good path to go down if you want to try and solve some of the problems we face!
Indirectly, yes. Although my work will never produce anything to directly help the environment, I do help keep the engines running so that other, cleverer engineers and scientists can do all sorts of work to benefit the future. Medicines and computing…and batteries and hydrogen fuel cells and all sorts!
If I was cleverer, perhaps I would know the specifics of what happens at Diamond, but I’m sure you can find some answers at http://www.diamond.ac.uk
