better understanding of basic physics is always the first step to exciting new things! my current project is a dark matter detector that could plug a lot of gaps in our understanding of the universe, so i imagine in the distant future there will be fantastic new machines which needed better knowledge of particle physics to build. its far too early to say though as it takes a very very long time to pay off!
There’s so much science that can be done with a particle accelerator like the one I work at that there’s a good chance every piece of technology in the future will have some part or piece of information involved that couldn’t have been developed without the help of a synchrotron.
The vibration measurement things I do for satellite testing might make sure a satellite in the future that carries a GPS signal you use to locate where you are while driving around works better. Or the camera measurement system i’m making might help make sure an airplane is assembled better. All hopefully making your life easier or safer, in a very small way.
