• Question: what is your vision of your product?

      The camera system I’m designing now (to measure the position of little shiny spheres inside of a room that you stick on things you want to track, like say an airplane wing that’s being assembled) is going to be patented later this year, and since me and a few guys at work are the inventors hopefully someday someone will want to buy it and i’ll get a small, tiny fraction of that income in my paycheck!

      We don’t really produce a product.

      If you think of the machine where I work as being like a huge ship, then I work in the engine room. Loads of scientists and engineers come on board to go exploring, but they wouldn’t get anywhere if my team and I weren’t keeping the boiler stoked.

      But I suppose I have a vision of the machine and what it means, why it’s important. It’s one of only about a dozen similar machined in the whole world! The science that you can do with a synchrotron like ours can’t be done anywhere else and it will push forward technology and knowledge such long way! Almost every area of study can be affected by the machine we run; not just science and medicine, but also history and art and anthropology!

      It’s an amazing machine that can do amazing things for the future of everyone!
