Well, for the past couple of years the place i work (NPL) has done a water rockets event day around July, where a few hundred school kids come and shoot off water rockets (they come from all over the country sometime). Then last year, our workshop decided they’d make the world’s biggest ever water rocket (3.4 meters long, it was awesome, see here http://www.npl.co.uk/news/water-rocket-challenge-2011).

So this year, one of the other scientists (not me) thought “hm, how can we involve lots of people in a world record??” and looked up the record for most water rockets launched at the same time. It’s something around 200 or 300. So we want to break it and get up to about 500, and since anyone can join as long as they have proof of launching the rocket at the right time (like taking a video that shows the time on an app on someone’s phone) i thought it’d be a perfect science communication thing.

If i win i’ll send some rocket kits to your class for a couple rockets to take part! It’s in June or July of this year we’ll do it.
