There are lots of engineers and scientists with experience in a wide range of areas where I work. Everyone is very willing to help if you ask – whether they are in your department or not! If no one on my site has the necessary expertise I contact external companies who have specialist knowledge and they are normally wiling to help (especially if they think they can sell you something). I am also fortunate that research is thought of as a collaborative effort, so I can ask people at other reasearch institutes for advice. An example of this was when I needed to estimate how much it would cost to make a new linear accelorator – CERN had just completed one so were very happy to help with my query and gave suggestions on the best way to do it. Nobody expects you to know everything so it is good to share your knowledge when asked and accept help from others.
I ask my fellow workers and my boss for help all the time, it’s really useful. We are in offices right next to each other so i can go over any time, or sometimes just literally shout out a question and see who the first person to answer is. It’s way better than homework in a way, because you can always (and SHOULD always) ask for help from others.
usually just my friends, i wander around a few offices until i find someone who doesnt look too busy and then bug them. theres also an indian guy called cham who lives in LA, he owes me a few favours and hes good at solving problems
Work is full of engineers and scientists who all have different specialities and areas of interest. I’ve yet to get stuck on a problem where I couldn’t find advice from someone in the company! Working with so many people with such a vast pool of knowledge and experience is amazing! There’s so much opportunity to learn new things!
