I am doing an engineering doctorate in water treatment. The project I am working on is in collaboration with some water companies. It is looking at improving slow sand filters.
Slow sand filters are a water treatment process that has been around for a very long time (over 200 years). It is very effective at removing contaminants from water, making it suitable for potable use. In addition, it is environmentally friendly. However, with increasing population and need to treat more water, methods are being devised to increase the efficiency and the capability of filters (without having to build new ones). My role in the project is to make sure that any changes and improvements being made does not affect the quality of the water produced, ensuring it remains safe for potable uses.

My Typical Day: I get to the site where I do my work at 7.30am, plan the work for the day and get going. Mostly I work in a pilot plant (i.e. where different processes are built on a small scale so that safe experiments can be done). I take water samples and do analysis in a lab or send the samples to a bigger lab for analysis I cannot do myself. I also look at data using basic computer software. I get two breaks (tea and lunch 😊). Since I start so early, I close a bit early too, at 3.30pm.
