One of my main tasks is calculating the power needed to run new water treatment plants. I also design circuits needed to run equipment on site which involves calculating cable sizes and fuses. This includes generator power too so plants can keep supplying clean water through power cuts.
In my current role it applies about 20% but as a mechanical design engineer, it was used every day to review designs of pumps and vessels to ensure they were safe and good for the environment
I have to authorise designs for projects, therefore I need to understand the principles behind how a design has been created, this requires an understanding of engineering principles which are based on the principles of maths and science.
