Most wind power is generated by three bladed horizontal axis wind turbines – these have been optimized over many years to capture the most wind with the lightest & cheapest design.
There are some current applications of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) – these tend to be small and located off the grid, either on buildings or supplying power in a remote area.
Kitepower (https://kitepower.nl) is an exciting new development in generating electricity from wind.
I don’t know a lot about tidal and hydro generation – use of vertical hydrofoils in tidal turbines would certainly be an interesting idea to research further.
