No, not really. When I first started and I was one of only a few women in my department, and sometimes I might even be the only woman in a meeting, I found that quite intimidating. But actually I soon realized that I was being treated exactly the same as the other people my age and actually as soon as you prove to them that you know what you’re talking about, more senior engineers- male or female, will just respect you for your abilities. Engineers and scientists pride themselves on being logical and making decisions based on evidence – so actually if you’re good at your job they are very welcoming regardless of your background, or gender, or age, or nationality or whatever, which I really enjoy. You can just earn respect by being good at your job, no matter who you are!

Luckily I have never experienced being treated differently just because I’m a female scientist (except when it comes to sweets, then I get double portions 😉 ). And I totally agree with Abbie – it can be intimidating being the only female engineer in a meeting or even in the whole company (which was the case in my company when I started), but when it comes to the actual work it doesn’t matter whether you are male or female and you will be treated equally.
