I was in primary school when I remember insisting I wanted to be a scientist, so about 5 I guess? I think I was in my 20’s before I realised I wanted to be a robotics engineer.
When I got my GCSE results and was trying to pick my A-level subjects was kind of when I decided. I did some work experience at an architects that summer as I thought I might have wanted to do that, but then I realised that the people that actually make buildings work aren’t architects – they’re engineers. and then I decided to be an engineer.
I was about 24 when I decided to be a (software) engineer. I realised throughout my Bachelor’s programme in maths that I found computer science more suitable for me as it is more practical. I would have never thought about being an engineer after I finished school, but I’m really happy that it happened that way. 🙂
I think I’ve been falling into engineering my whole life so it’s hard to put an age on it! I think engineering chose me rather than me choosing engineering…but I suppose the first time I “chose” to be an engineer would be when I went to university (18 years old) and decided to study Mechanical Engineering.
What do you guys think you want to do after school?
