  This is a really good question!
  
  A lot of my work is towards making underwater robots better, then robots can help humans with the jobs which are repetitive, dangerous or unpleasant.
  
  My PhD research is focused on the dangerous bit, I want my whiskers to give underwater robots a sense of touch so they can safely clear underwater mines!

  My job has loads of aspects that are geared towards the future- one is enabling us all to have all the communications we want and expect, like sky tv, mobile phones, live sports coverage from the other side of the world, internet in remote areas, that kind of thing, and making sure that those that aren’t currently able to access those kind of things get connected too. then there’s the earth observation stuff- monitoring climate change, deforestation, desertification, land use, optimizing farming in each area dependent on the climate and conditions there, disaster monitoring and reporting, etc. Then there’s the fact that we’re developing the technology and the spacecraft to ultimately take our race to other planets, harvest resources from asteroids, set up colonies on moons or other planets, and so on.

  We know very little about the sea so all my developments in underwater robotics can help to get our robots deeper and discover more stuff. They are not only used for oil and gas, they can also be used for installing new renewable sources of energy, or harvesting important minerals from the ocean floor. Who know what we’ll discover next down there, but the underwater robots will no doubt play an important part in that.

  That’s a good question really, well I hope to become chartered one day and progress to the forefront of engineering and I suppose help my company grow and dominate the market so by doing so there will be more food machinery and more engineering in the world
  
  I already hire engineers and apprentices so bringing new people into the world of engineering makes a stronger engineering future for all

  The work and research we do helps to optimise tasks in manufacturing, which could have different benefits – we build a safer environment for operators, things can be produced faster and more cost effective, more difficult tasks could be carried out, etc. So in a way I hope to improve the manufacturing process in the future. 🙂
