It’s different every day so that’s a really tough question to answer! I love it because of that though as it means you never get bored! It’s very creative, as you’re always designing new things. And you get to work as part of a team that are all working for the same objective. There’s 150 people working on the rover at Airbus! So it’s also very social and collaborative. And we have nice offices and break out areas where you can go and discuss ideas and designs and things with colleagues so it’s quite a nice working environment. I also like that it’s a 9-5 job. I know that sounds boring but it means you do your work, and then you go home and see friends and do whatever you like in the evenings and weekends. I love my job but I love my work-life balance too! I couldn’t be a doctor or something where you have to work night shifts or weekends! ;o)
It’s so varied! Like I mentioned on my profile a typical day does not exist!
One day I could be designing tools for cutting, grabbing, pumping, moving, turning…anything you can think of, but all 3000m under the surface of the ocean! The next I could be involved in costing up large development projects; or maybe meeting with clients and suppliers to discuss what needs done; or I could be refurbishing old, broken tools to get them back in the field. The variety keeps me on my toes and makes sure I never get bored.
It depends what kind of engineering you do – but In my case I would describe it as problem solving. For this I have to do research, build / develop and test. I’m not involved in the financial aspects, that’s my manager’s work. I’m assigned to a small team, but I normally work with other teams as well. You normally work on a project and attend meetings to discuss the work and network. There are so many aspects to “being an engineer”, which makes the job interesting every single day. 🙂
