Ah currymuncher, I’m afraid that’s between me and my bank! But safe to say that engineers are paid better than a lot of other jobs due to the skill, type of work and professionalism that engineers must portray. You should certainly be able to live a comfortable life on an engineering salary.
I’m afraid I’m not allowed to tell you exactly, as that’s part of my company’s rules. But graduate engineers at my company start on about £27,000 and then it goes up steadily from there. We also get paid overtime, which helps if you are working hard towards a deadline and putting in more hours than usual – it’s a nice little reward for your hard work!
I saw a recent study that showed that over their working lives, engineering was among the best paid of all professions – we may not have the sky high starting salaries of finance or law, but our salaries increase steadily with experience and responsibility, and it’s a really steady job as well as there is a shortage of engineers- so you’re pretty much guaranteed employment!
