I personally get a lot of materials from Ebay or Amazon as you can buy very small quantities with next day delivery, for just a few pound you can get bits of titanium or plastic to try out for an idea. Another place is remote control or robotics online shops like hobbyking or cool components are good too . Whilst at work we have professional and certified suppliers, but these usually have a minimum order quantity and need an account etc, it’s probably the same supplier as your school, two good ones are Farnell Onecall and RS. Keep in mind you can make a lot out of household items like plastic bottles, fabric, glue, cardboard, all of this is easy to get in a supermarket or DIY shop like B&Q or Homebase.
I hope I do not get told off for saying brand name shops!!
