I think you mean ROV. ROV stands for remotely operated vehicle, these robots are basically remote control, but sometimes have some autonomous(self driving) functions such has hold position or maintain depth as these are easy functions for a system to do by themselves. My work is aimed at AUV s which stands for autonomous underwater vehicle or UUVs which stands for unmanned underwater vehicle, they mean the same thing. Frequently people confuse the names like UAV which mean unmanned aerial vehicle. I try just to say underwater robots or flying robots, but I am sure more professional and serious people use the correct terms 🙂

As Tom has said we normally call them ROV’s (Remotely Operated Vehicles), but I suppose you could call it at RUV meaning Remote Underwater Vehicle?

As for the idea, I don’t think anyone has been credited with inventing them, but the US Navy did a lot of work in getting the ROVs to where they are now.
