When I was at school I made a hovercraft that I could ride on for a science project. It wasn’t very expensive to make as it used some wood and a shower curtain and got powered by a vacuum cleaner. It is probably the favorite thing I have made because it was the first building project I did on my own and it was great fun to ride on the hover craft 😀
I just like making things, doesn’t really matter what. Loads of my hobbies are creative, but I have a really short attention span so I flick between different things every few months. I’ve gone through knitting, pyrography, baking, sewing, calligraphy, woodwork, silversmithing, skecthing, origami, and loads more. I love making beautiful things (like origami flower centrepieces for the tables at my wedding), or tasty things (I was pretty proud of a gingerbread Mars rover I made that had wheels that actually spun), or things that other people will enjoy as gifts (like a blanket for my friend’s baby, or matching bobble hats for my whole family).
I also loved making ExoMars, which was the main space mission that I’ve been working on for the last few years. It will be Europe’s first Mars rover mission, and I’m very proud to have been part of the design team! :o)
When I was at school I really enjoyed making a small remote control car. You could do this if you are interested in electronics using an arduino – google “arduino car kit”. Recently I also made a robotic arm for an outreach activity, using 3D printed parts. Again you can buy kits online, if you are interested. When I was 22 I built a robot as part of my PhD to go inside a vacuum chamber – I’m very proud of that – its used to make measurements of Moon rock – rock that was brought back from the Apollo missions.
