Space engineering combines lots of different types of engineering. We need mechanical engineers to design the spacecraft, electrical engineers to design the electronics and communications, thermal engineers to keep the spacecraft cool, even civil engineers to build the rocket launch pads. In my job as a researcher building science instruments for space missions – I do a bit of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. I really enjoy that I get to lots of different types of engineering.
What Tris said. Space engineers are mechancial, electrical, electronic, thermal, computer, optical, system engineers alongside physicists of different flavours (often in the engineer roles), project managers/assistants, programmers and quality assurance (which is very important on space builds).
